Half ａ century has passed since Oswald Speneler (1880～1936) prophesied the fall of Western civilization. It has
become ａ reality today; yet ironically and tragically, the one which fell most dramatically and was damaged most
seriously is not the West, but our country, Japan, in East Asia. The basic reason for this is that the Japanese people, hav-
ing been so busy absorbing Western civilization, neglected the traditional Oriental spirit, and at the same time, failed to
comprehend the essence of the Western spirit underlying the civilization of Europe｡

　Our missions are clear. First, it is to devote ourselves to the pursuit of truth as scholars. The pursuit of truth means
the struggle against falsehood. We must expose falsehood and deception，and lead people toward truth in accordance
with our scholarly conscience. Our second mission is to recognize the limit of human capacity, without undermining
our scholarly enthusiasm for truth.

　There is a Hebebraic concept in the West that man is created by God. This idea has begun to lose influence gradually
in modern times, and the idea of man's omonipotence is gaining prevalence.
　This ｅxplains partially the fall of Western civilization. The concept of man as ａ creation of God, however, is still
persistent in the　West, and is ａ positive force sustaining its civilization. There is not such a concept in the Orient,
where Hebraism had littie influence. Instead, there was an idea　which identified man with nature, or considered
man as ａ part of nature.

　Ourgoals to harmonize the Hebraic concept of man as ａ creation of God and the Oriental view of nature, and
to achieve　reconciliation again with the universe. We scholars of Japan should cooperate with our friends in
neighboring Asian　countries, and disseminate our message to the world, i.e. that we should adopt the mind of
the universe as our own　through the pursuit of truth.

　スペングラーが西洋文明の没落を予言し、警告してから半世紀近くなるが、それは今や現実となった。
しかし、皮肉でもあり、悲劇的でもあるのは没落の頂点にたち、それの最も深刻な影響を受けているのが
西洋自体ではなく、極東にある我が日本であるということである。
その根本的原因は日本が西洋文明の吸収に忙し過ぎる余り東洋の伝統的精神を忘れると共に、西洋文明の
基盤になっている西洋精神の真髄に触れることを怠ったからである。従って我々は限下文明危機の頂点に
立たせられることになったのである。これは確かに皮肉であり、悲劇的である。
しかし、他面から見ればそれ故に我々こそ世界文明の危機超克の責任を課せられ、偉大なる使命を帯びて
いるとも考えられるのではあるまいか。

我々の使命は明かである。
　第一は学者としての本文に鑑み、真理の探求に邁進することである。真理の探求に邁進するとは
虚偽と闘うことである。今日のような世界的危機にはニセ救世主、ニセ予言者、ニセ学者が現われ、
世比を惑わすのが通 例である。我々は学者的良心に従い、敢然として彼らの虚偽、欺瞞を暴露し、
真理への道を示すべきである。
　第二は学者としての真理探求への情熱を毫も損なうことなく、人間性の限界を認識することである。
西洋においてはヘブライズムの影響の下、人は神から造られたものであるという意識があった。
この意識は近世以後次第に薄らぎ人間万能思想が横行するようになり、そこに西洋文明没落の
原因が生じたのであるが、にもかかわらず被造物意識は今なお深く根をおろし、それが今なお
西洋文明存続の支持力となっている。
　ヘブライズムの影響を受けていない東洋には被造物意識はない。しかしそれに代わり人間と
自然と一体、又は人間を自然の一部と見る思想があった。我々は西洋から科学思想を取り入
れるにあたりこの東洋思想を放鄭し、自然を敵視する自然征服の心理を持つようになりそこに
自然と人間精神の無制限な荒廃をもたらすことになった。
我々の任務はヘブライズムによる被造物意識と東洋的自然観を調和し、再び大宇宙と和解することである。

　幸いにして我々には世界89ヵ国に有力な同志がいる。日本において学問研究に邁進する我々はまず
近隣のアジアの友好国の学者と協力し、進んでこれを世界の同志にひろめ、真理の探求を通 じて
大宇宙の心を自らの心にしたいと念願する。
